VCSC DATA DASHBOARD

Welcome to the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission’s dashboard portal. The goal of this project is to connect the public to integral data sources that are organized in a simple, informative format. Provided below are links to our interactive data dashboards that are compiled through a variety of different data sources collected throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Clicking on any of the following tabs will take you to the selected dashboard on Tableau. Dashboard Summaries, User Instructions, and Notes on the Data are provided at the beginning of each data dashboard for your convenience. If you have any questions, or ways that you feel that any of the data dashboards can be improved, please feel free to contact us.  

User Instructions

• Filters: Case data is broken out into five categories: Fiscal Year, Primary Offense Group, Primary VCC, Circuit Court Number, and Locality. Press the Clear Filter button to the right (red X and funnel icon) to reset the filter and include all cases for a category. To fully reset the dashboard, select Clear Filter on all categories. To select multiple values within a filter, toggle the Multi-Select button (triple checkmark icon). To quickly select only one value within a filter, turn off the Multi-Select button and select the desired value. Once all filters are set to include your desired values, the dashboard visuals, summary metrics, and VCC/Localities tables will all be populated with the data you selected.

• Selection Summary: This tab displays all values currently selected in the dashboard filters. It can be accessed via the "View Current Filter Settings" button on the Dashboard, or the "Selection Summary" tab. The tab functions as a checkpoint to verify that all filters are configured as desired, and as an important output supplement for reference.

• VCC and Locality Tab: This tab can be accessed via the "View Details by Selected VCCs" button on the Dashboard, or via the "Data by VCC & Locality" tab. Case counts and median sentence lengths are displayed for each selected VCC. Offense groups for the selected VCCs can be consolidated and collapsed. Case Counts are displayed for filterable Localities within Circuit Courts.

• Export options: Once downloaded, this file serves as a dynamic dashboard which you can reset to display an unlimited number of case sets. You can save specified dashboard results to pdf to preserve a "screenshot" of the results which cannot be overwritten (File>Export>Create PDF). You could also save a separate spreadsheet copy of the results to retain the ability to fine tune filters and explore different case counts.
